mrd in Girls' Life

soooo i made this awesome two toned turband in a fun cream and pastel print combo...
and this month it was featured in Girls' Life Magazine!!!!
sometimes my life totally rocks...i am blessed.

how about a little rant?

so i've been slacking on the blog every day in may challenge, but i'm back for day 22 and it's a good one: "rant about something"
seriously i've been looking forward to this day since the challenge started.  i am like the queen of complaining...i could whine about anything and everything if i could...and i usually do, but on the blog i try not to do it because who really wants to read a blog full of complaining?
so # 1 thing that is totally annoying to me right now...
my name is NOT mila!!!
i get that a lot of people name their business after their own name...i mean i'm a total narcissist and i definitely thought of naming my hair accessory line melis, but i thought it would be more fun to incorporate my siblings...hence the name mila (Melissa, Ian, Laura, Austin)...first initials of the sibs in our birth order...awww soooo precious.  HOWEVER....everyone seems to think that i am the mila of mila rose....sorry kids i'm just the letter m...
BECAUSE MY NAME IS MELISSA
(or melis for all of my close friends...which would be you guys)
sometimes i just go with it when i'm doing a trunk show or something like that, but if i send you an email and i sign it, melis, then why are you writing back to me with, hi mila....ugh soooo annoying.

#2 thing that is driving me crazy is how every girl/woman/mom/daughter/etc in san antonio feels the need to be so matchy matchy with their outfits.  literally they will buy a coral dress and then pick out a coral necklace, earrings, bracelet, shoes....who wants to look like a big sherbet popsicle, because that's exactly what you look like when you wear ALL THE SAME COLOR!!!  and it's so funny, because when i suggest other things to put with outfits when i'm working in the boutique people look at me like i'm crazy..."you want me to mix gold and silver jewelry"..."put a pink necklace with this navy and mint dress"..."you mean if i'm wearing white jeans i can wear any color top"...seriously this is what people say to me...and then i just blankly stare back at them because they can't really be asking me these dumb questions right...ohhhh but they are...seriously san antonio...i will make you mix a stripe maxi with a floral top and you're going to love it!!!

and finally the #3 thing that i feel like complaining about...why is it so difficult to find cute black wedges?  i've looked everywhere and i cannot find any...poop.  i have all of these cute summer dresses that must have a black wedge, but i've got nothing...blah...someone help me with my shoe dilemma please!!!

anyways how about some happy news!!!  the winner of the Buck and Libby custom doodle is....
Kelly from messy.dirty.hair!!  woohoo!!  can't wait to see how your doodle turns out!!

gatsby...what gatsby?

have you guys seen the great gatsby yet?  such an amazing movie....i feel like i need to see it again just to absorb all the fashion and hair and makeup.  i love the glitz and the glam of the the 20s fashion...and i'm definitely going to incorporate some of that into the fall line!!  hooray!!  and how perfect is this cute racer back tank from t shirts 314?  i of course wore it when i went to see the movie, along with my 20s inspired mrd...i wanted to rock the sequin skirt that i wore to my roaring 20s flapper party, but i thought that might be a bit much;)

a little addiction...

guys i may have developed a small problem...with shopping.  ok so i've always liked clothes...what girl doesn't?  and before we moved to texas i was so good about not buying new clothes.  we had an elopement to pay for and the move so new clothes just wasn't very high on the list.  and then we moved and i realized that a lot of the stuff in my closet was just kind of old and blah.  keep in mind that i probably took about 7 very large garbage bags full of clothes to resell or to good will before we moved.    sometimes i just don't like getting rid of things...you know the second you get rid of something is when you wish you had it right?

so once i got the boutique job, i realized that some of my old poop clothes just weren't going to cut it.  i wanted to look cute and so i needed to add a few new things to the wardrobe.  and i think because i hadn't gotten anything new and fun in so long, i've kinda been going cray cray with the shopping.  and now it's like i can't stop....eeeekkkk!!!  but at least i'll look cute right??

buck & libby

shut the front door!!!!  are you freaking out looking at that amazing custom doodle??  i literally got this and was like jumping up and down at how perfect it is...i mean, hello....it looks just like me!!!  seriously...one of the coolest things EVER!!!!  it's the background on my new iphone so i can look at my pretty doodled face all day long;)  wanna learn more about this amazing print and how you can win one of your own??  here is megan, to tell you all about it!!
Hello new friends! I'm Megan, illustrator and owner of Buck & Libby an Etsy shop and website on a mission to doodle-ize the world! I create all sorts of fun things including frameable doodle prints, greeting cards, stationery, and custom portraits and home illustrations.
One of my favorite parts of my job are doing custom portraits for people. I always feel so honored that they trust me to create such a meaningful gift for their loved ones and I enjoy getting a little glimpse into their lives and personalities through the photos they send me.
The process is pretty simple: they place an order in my Etsy shop and email me some photos to base their illustration on. Then, I get to work! I hand-draw everything first, then color and format everything digitally. When I'm finished, I email a proof to the customer and they let me know if anything needs added or edited. Once everything is exactly right and approved, the final version is sent!
Confession: right before I send them the finished product, I always get a tiny bit nervous. It's that moment that every artist feels right before they reveal what they've been working on. "Will they like it?" "What if they hate it?" "I should have changed this or added that". But nothing makes me happier than getting a response back saying, "OMG it's perfect!", "It's even better than I imagined", or my personal favorite, "It looks EXACTLY like us!" It makes it all worth it.
Not only do I love to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces for my customers, but I also really enjoy connecting with them and hearing all about what they plan to do with their doodles. Since each custom order comes as a digital file, it makes it easy for my customers to get really creative! I've seen my custom work turned into wedding Save The Dates and invitations, notebooks and guestbooks, and even t-shirts and coffee mugs. The possibilities are endless!
Along with custom portraits, my shop is filled with adorable doodles, fun gifts, and smile-inducing prints. I truly have SO much fun creating the work that I do and I am a firm believer that if we surround ourselves with things that make us smile everyday, our lives will inevitably be brighter.
I hope you hop over to my Facebook page and introduce yourself there. I can't wait to meet you!
ok are you now as obsessed as i am with megan and her shop??  i know you are, which is why i'm so excited that megan is giving away a custom doodle of up to 2 people to one lucky winner!  all you have to do is enter below!!  good luck:)
